ROYAL CARIBBEAN INTERNATIONAL BEGINS CONSTRUCTION ON THIRD OASIS-CLASS SHIP

World’s Largest Global Cruise Line Celebrates Steel Cutting in Saint-Nazaire, France MIAMI, September 23, 2013 – Royal Caribbean International cut the first piece of steel today for its third Oasis-class ship, marking the first construction milestone for a vessel that, at approximately 227,700 GRT, will be the world’s largest and most innovative cruise ship. Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd.’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Richard D. Fain and Royal Caribbean International President and CEO, Adam Goldstein together with Laurent Castaing, chief executive officer, STX France, attended the event at the STX shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, France, where the ship will be built. The cruise line’s third Oasis-class ship is expected to be delivered in mid-2016. “The Oasis-class ships have fundamentally changed the cruising landscape with the cornucopia of amenities and innovations that can be found on-board,” said Fain. “We are delighted to be offering a third Oasis-class vessel for our guests as well as to be back at STX France after such a long tradition of building amazing ships together.” “We are excited to once again partner with Royal Caribbean International,” said Castaing, “We have built 12 ships for Royal Caribbean and are extremely proud of the strength of our relationship. Oasis 3 is one of the biggest challenges ever undertaken in the history of our company and our teams are excited and ready to make this a successful project.” Oasis 3 joins sister-ships Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas which took the cruise industry by storm with their introduction in 2009 and 2010, respectively, featuring a revolutionary design with a split superstructure and the cruise line’s neighbourhood concept of seven distinct themed areas. At 225,282 GRT and spanning 16 decks with 2,700 staterooms, the Oasis class ships also introduced extraordinary “firsts” at sea such as an 82 foot-long zip line, a handcrafted carousel, the Rising Tide elevating bar, the AquaTheater high-diving performance venue, and the Central Park with more than 12,000 live trees and plants. The Oasis class also offers amenities that can only be found on Royal Caribbean, such as twin FlowRider surf simulators, cantilevered whirlpools, an ice-skating rink, the H2O Zone kids aquapark, and the Royal Promenade, an interior boulevard that stretches nearly the length of the ship and flanked by restaurants, lounges and boutiques, among many others. “Our Oasis-class ships have led the charge in delivering the WOW for which Royal Caribbean is known,” said Goldstein. “We are delighted to get the building process underway and look forward to the next chapter of this amazing class of ships.” Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas sail weekly, alternating seven-night Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries, from Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. In October 2014, Oasis of the Seas will sail a short autumn season in Europe from Barcelona, Spain before entering dry-dock for routine maintenance at the Képpel Verolme shipyard in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Details of the third Oasis-class ship will be revealed in the coming months. Royal Caribbean International is an award-winning global cruise brand with a 40-year legacy of innovation and introducing industry “firsts” never before seen at sea. The cruise line features an expansive and unmatched array of features and amenities only found on Royal Caribbean including, jaw-dropping, Broadway-style entertainment and industry-acclaimed programming that appeals to families and adventurous vacationers alike. Owned by Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (NYSE/OSE: RCL), the cruise line sails 21 of the world’s most innovative cruise ships to the most popular destinations in the Caribbean, Europe, Alaska, South America, the Far East, and Australia and New Zealand. World renowned for its friendly and engaging Gold Anchor Service, delivered by every staff and crew member, Royal Caribbean has been voted “Best Cruise Line Overall” for 10 consecutive years in the Travel Weekly Reader’s Choice Awards. - See more at: http://www.cruises.co.za/news/royal-caribbean-international-begins-construction-on-third-oasis-class-ship#sthash.MkQpseCp.dpuf

CRYSTAL WINS 20THYEAR AS CONDÉ NAST TRAVELER READERS’

2013 Score is Highest of All Small, Midsize, and Large-Ship Cruise Lines

LOS ANGELES, October 16, 2013 – For a record 20th year, Condé Nast Traveler magazine readers have voted ultra-luxe Crystal Cruises the industry’s “Best Cruise Line” (Midsize).  Crystal’s winning score of 94.4 is the company’s highest since 2004, second highest ever, and highest overall score of all Small, Midsize, and Large-ship cruise lines.  Crystal significantly outranked its luxury peers in almost all the voting categories, including Itineraries, Excursions, Service, Food, Activities/Facilities, and Design.  The line also bested its own previous top scores in the Service and Food categories, and tied its past personal best in Itineraries.  All Readers’ Choice winners and scores are listed at www.cntraveler.com/rcawill be featured in the U.S. magazine’s November 2013 issue.

With ground-breaking enhancements to its vacation experience and $120 million invested in redesigns, while retaining the service, choices, and quality for which the line has been known, Crystal’s ratings have consistently climbed in recent years.

“To earn this award once is an incredible achievement; to be recognized by discerning travelers for an unprecedented 20 years is astounding,” said Edie Bornstein, Crystal’s new president and chief operating officer, who joined the company today.  “While I have long admired Crystal from afar, it was only when I recently sailed that I fully grasped why this experience receives such consistent accolades.  Every single member of the Crystal team works incredibly hard to give discerning vacationers a Six-Star standard of luxury travel that is unwavering, while leading new developments within cruising.  I want to personally thank all of Crystal’s crew, employees, associates, and guests for their part in this humbling, momentous win, and look forward to leading the company into the next two decades of record-breaking awards.”

Crystal’s product enhancements from the past year’s voting window have included new, exclusive Boutique Adventures; private cars and drivers ashore; adding more connecting staterooms; new America’s Got Talent’s iLuminate and Magic Castle at Sea entertainment on every cruise; the first Living Wall at sea; digital filmmaking education on every voyage, in partnership with USC’s School of Cinematic Arts; and a $15 million Extreme Makeover of Crystal Symphony’s Avenue Saloon, Palm Court, Galaxy Lounge, Hollywood Theatre, Bridge Lounge, passenger boarding area, and Fantasia and Waves “junior cruisers.”  Recently-announced additions to Crystal’s offerings include PURE allergy-friendly staterooms; Crystal Celebrations global event planning services; a new Connoisseur Beer menu; optional or inclusive land programs in Tibet, Thailand, and Cambodia; new theme cruises in 2014-15; and a $17 million Extreme Makeover of Crystal Serenity planned for next month.

The Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards are among the most preeminent in travel, honoring the best hotels, airlines, cruise lines, cities, rental car companies, and islands from around the world.  Almost twice as many readers voted this year as last -- a record 79,268 -- ranking their personal experiences with cruise lines’ Itineraries, Excursions, Service, Food, Activities/Facilities, Staterooms, and Design.

The renowned Crystal Experience has been rated “World’s Best” more than any other cruise line, hotel, or resort in history.  The newest “Best” award is but the latest in a string of readers’ choice awards Crystal has won it its size category this year, including Condé Nast Traveler’s #1 and #2 cruise ships, Travel + Leisure magazine’s World’s Best Cruise Line and Service and Cruise Critic’s Best Dining, Entertainment, and Public Rooms.

Luxury cruises of 5-108 days, up to early 2016, on the line’s Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony, are available in the Mediterranean, Western Europe, British Isles, Scandinavia/Baltic & Russia, Africa, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, South Pacific, South America, New England/Canada, Panama Canal, Caribbean, and a sumptuous World Cruise.  Until October 31, all-inclusive, value-priced “Book Now” fares start at just $1,215 per person, double occupancy.

Silversea’s second expedition ship Silver Galapagos sets sail

Luxury expedition cruise specialist Silversea has launched its second expedition ship. Fresh from a major refurbishment, the 100-guest ship (formerly named Galapagos Explorer II) embarked 28 September on her first-ever voyage as Silver Galapagos.

Prior to setting sail, a christening ceremony was held on board, attended by local dignitaries and company executives. Highlighting the occasion were speeches by Manfredi Lefebvre d’Ovidio, Silversea’s chairman; Santiago Dunn, vice president of Silversea, Ecuador; and Conrad Combrink, Silversea’s director of expedition cruises. Following the traditional blessing by a priest, the chairman’s daughter, Costanza Lefebvre d’Ovidio, the ship’s godmother, officially welcomed Silver Galapagos into the Silversea fleet by cutting a ceremonial ribbon.

The all-suite Silver Galapagos has just completed a major stem-to-stern refurbishment. All public spaces and guest suites have been refreshed with new upholstery, carpeting, curtains, and wall treatments. Each suite is highlighted by a totally renovated bathroom, enhanced with rich marble detailing. Besides a new walk-in rainforest shower, each bathroom features a new vanity, shelving, mirrors, lighting fixtures, and wood flooring. Plus, all guest suites have been outfitted with new flat screen TVs, new mattresses (custom-made exclusively for Silversea), and luxurious Pratesi bed linens.

Other ship enhancements include the installation of Wi-Fi access throughout the ship (including all suites) and a new complimentary service providing streaming movies and live television news broadcasts for guests to enjoy on their portable devices.

And rounding out the renovations are a new fitness centre, massage room, beauty salon, outdoor Jacuzzi, outdoor furniture, and Silversea’s signature outdoor dining venue, The Grill.

In his remarks at the christening ceremony, Lefebvre d’Ovidio stated, “It is our aim that this ship will not only offer our guests the highest level of comfort and service, but also enlighten them to the rarity and beauty of the Galápagos Islands.”

Silver Galapagos sails Saturday to Saturday on seven-day roundtrip voyages from Baltra Island, following either a western or north central route. These expedition cruises offer adventurous travellers the life-enriching chance to discover a wild, pristine paradise that has long been regarded as a natural laboratory of evolution. On complimentary expeditions ashore guided by an experienced expedition team (certified by the Galápagos National Park Service), Silversea’s guests may experience up-close encounters with an abundance of wildlife that includes sun-basking land iguanas, giant tortoises, blue- and red-footed boobies, colourful marine iguanas, sea lions, penguins and Darwin’s famous finches.

Fred Olsen to offer meteor shower cruise

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines will be offering guests the chance to take in one of nature’s most spectacular light shows, the ‘Perseid Meteor Showers’, with Braemar’s 13-night M1422 ‘Canaries Meteor Showers’ cruise, sailing from Dover on 4th August 2014.

This exciting ‘experience’ cruise will give guests the opportunity to view the stunning, multi-coloured ‘Perseid Meteor Shower’ at the optimum time, whilst visiting the beautiful Canary Islands and Portugal. The ‘Perseids’ are so-called because the point from which they appear to come, called the ‘radiant’, lies within the constellation, ‘Perseus’. Referred to by many as ‘Nature’s celestial firework display’, the ‘Perseid Meteor Showers’ are the result of material falling from the tail of the comet Swift-Tuttle. Best seen during the early evenings and nightfall within the first two weeks of August, guests on board this cruise can channel their ‘amateur astronomist’, as they look out for these ‘shooting stars’ – which reach a rate of 60 or more per hour at their peak – in stunning surroundings.

This cruise visits Funchal, on the lovely ‘Garden Isle’ of Madeira, for an overnight stay. Compact enough to explore on foot, the island has some fine museums, and its climate and rich soil allow for some exquisite gardens.

Next, Braemar visits Santa Cruz in Tenerife.  Here, guests can discover the wonders of the extinct volcano, Mount Teide, in El Teide National Park, explore the mix of modern and historic buildings, or take a tour to the Pyramids of Guimar. These incredible pyramid-shaped structures date back to the 19th Century and are located in the fascinating ‘Secret Garden’, which contains some of the most dangerous plants in the world.

Braemar then calls at the largest island, Gran Canaria, where the ship docks in Las Palmas. This popular island boasts a fascinating history; in Plaza Santa Ana, there are bronze statues of dogs, referencing the Romans’ naming of the islands after legendary canines.

Arrecife, Lanzarote is the next port of call, a bustling port with two splendid castles overlooking the harbour area, which date back to the 16th and 17th Centuries. The older of the two buildings, ‘Castillo San Gabriel’, houses the Ethnographic Museum, which tells the story of the original inhabitants of the island, the Gaunche. Guests venturing slightly further out of the town can explore the lunar landscape of the Timanfaya National Park.

Lisbon, Portugal’s bustling capital, is the final port of call, a city rich in maritime history. There is much to explore, including monasteries, museums, and Gothic cathedrals. Other attractions include ‘Rossio Square’, the city’s old quarter, and the ‘April 25th’ suspension bridge, one of the world’s largest. For more adventurous guests, there is an exhilarating Jeep Safari tour in the imposing Sintra Mountains.

Etihad launches new flights to Los Angeles

Etihad Airways has announced the launch of direct flights to Los Angeles.

The expansion of its US operation will see the airline commence non-stop daily flights between its Abu Dhabi home-base and Los Angeles from June 1st, 2014, subject to regulatory approvals.

The Californian city will be Etihad Airways’ fourth US destination, joining Chicago, New York and Washington DC, and will see the airline provide 28 return flights each week between the UAE and US.

The announcement was made by James Hogan, Etihad Airways’ president, Los Angeles.

Hogan said: “We are delighted to add Los Angeles, a major US and global destination with a significant metropolitan population and growing economy, to the Etihad Airways’ network in 2014.

“This expansion will see Etihad Airways offer air travellers daily flights, from our Abu Dhabi hub, to four destinations across the United States.

The new service will increase Etihad Airways’ operations in the US market by 33 per cent and cater for growing leisure and business traffic demands in Los Angeles, as well as the considerable catchment area of the city.

Los Angeles, one of the world’s most iconic, popular, and multicultural destinations with a metropolitan population area of more than 18 million people, is the second largest in the US.

It is classified as a ‘global city’ with strengths in business, international trade, entertainment, culture, media, fashion, science, sports, technology, education, medicine and research.

Hogan added: “The expansion of the US network also will be of considerable benefit to the growing commercial and cultural ties between the US and UAE, with trade between the two countries set to increase beyond the current annual level of USD 22.5 billion.”

Costa Concordia captain blames helmsman

Francesco Schettino, captain of the Costa Concordia, which sank off Italy in 2012, has blamed his Indonesian helmsman for the accident. Schettino claims the helmsman failed to obey orders to slow down and steered the ship onto rocks. The captain is presently fighting charges of causing the shipwreck and abandoning ship.Thirty-two people died when the cruise ship capsized in January 2012. Helmsman Jacob Rusli Bin has already been convicted of manslaughter in a separate trial. He was one of five Costa employees who were granted plea bargains in return for mild sentences in a separate proceeding. He was given a sentence of one year and eight months. Investigators have said previously language problems between the captain and the helmsman might have played a role in crash. Schettino claimed if the helmsman had quickly executed the correct manoeuvre, the Concordia would have steered away from the jagged reef that sliced a hole in its side.

What Are the Benefits of Using a Travel Agent?

With the dozens of online travel sites and the ability to book directly with almost any airline, hotel or other travel service, it would seem that travel agents might go the way of the dinosaurs. The American Society of Travel Agents, though, reports travel agents sell 85 percent of all cruises and 70 percent of all packages and tours, as of 2008. Agents are still in demand, and offer plenty of benefits when you are booking your vacation.

Time and Money Savings

Sometimes, spending hours on the computer searching for the best travel deals gets you results -- and other times, it just leads to frustration. When you work with a travel agent, she does that legwork, searching out the travel options that best meet your needs and budget. In most cases, travel agents have access to information about rates and routes that average consumer might not have, saving you time and money, even when you consider the agent's fee. Using a travel agent can also help you score a great deal on a package or promotion. Agents generally receive information and access to promotions from resorts, cruise lines and other travel providers that aren't available to the general public.

Travel Assistance

You're en route to a Caribbean cruise a when a snowstorm in Detroit delays your flight in Philadelphia. If you booked your travel through an agent, you can call him to get assistance with rebooking your travel arrangements. When you book through an online travel site, you might not be able to get that level of personalized attention, or you could have trouble finding someone who can help you get where you need to be. If something goes wrong when you arrive at your destination, such as your room is unacceptable or the transportation to the resort never shows up, your travel agent can usually resolve those problems.

Travel Recommendations

Perhaps you've always wanted to take a cruise, but you're not sure which cruise line is best for you or where you want to go. Maybe you want to take the kids to Disney World, but you're having trouble navigating the endless array of ticket and package options. A travel agent can help. Many travel agents specialize in a particular type of travel, such as cruises, Disney or Europe, and are able to make recommendations and help you plan a trip that meets your needs and budget. Their inside knowledge helps you avoid wasting time and money on the things you're not interested in, and lets you focus instead on taking the trip.

Perks

Travel agents who book a high volume of trips often have access to perks that you might not be able to get on your own. Whether it's a room upgrade, a fee waiver or even reservations at a hot resort or on a popular tour, travel agents often add perks into your vacation plan. If you are planning a trip for a special occasion, such as a marriage proposal, a travel agent has access to the resources and people who can help you plan the perfect event.

Germany joins chorus warning against Egyptian Red Sea travel

Germany has warned its citizens not to travel to Red Sea tourist resorts in Egypt as the political situation in the destination continues to deteriorate.

Officials had previously excluded holiday areas from its travel advice.

However, Germany has decided against issuing a full travel warning that would mean tourists being evacuated.

The US, Sweden and Finland have already issued alerts for the resorts, advising against travel to the whole of Egypt.

The UK continues to advise travel to Red Sea resorts is safe.

Trami to target Taiwan and China

Trami to target Taiwan and China
Updated 20 Aug 2013 @ 09:21
This alert applies to to the following locations: China / Taiwan
Tropical storm Trami is targeting Taiwan and parts of eastern China. Slow-moving Trami is expected to strengthen to a typhoon Tuesday, as it begins a northwest, then west-northwest track.

On this track, Trami's center will track near or over Taiwan, home to roughly 23 million people, on Wednesday, most likely as a Category 1- or  2-equivalent typhoon. From there, Trami will track toward southeast China by Thursday, most likely remaining well south of Shanghai and north of Hong Kong.

Storm surge flooding is expected along Taiwan's east coast as Trami approaches, and damaging winds will also be a threat, particularly over Taiwan's higher elevations. The most serious threat may be from flash flooding and mudslides in Taiwan, as well as over southeast China this week.

Stansted baggage scanner strike called off

Stansted baggage scanner strike called off
Updated 20 Aug 2013 @ 09:22
A Bank Holiday strike at Stansted has been called off after the baggage scanning staff involved in a dispute over pay reached an agreement with employers Mitie. GMB said its members had reached an agreement after talks between the two parties.

The dispute involving baggage scanners began in June this year when Mitie imposed pay cuts from June which included a cut in premium rates for night work and overtime by 3.5% and increased pay rates by 2%.

GMB said they were pleased Mitie had agreed to pay members what they had been asking for since October last year.

The strike had been due to take place over four days from 23 August.

Why You Need A Travel Agent

If you like to travel (who doesn’t?) here’s a great New Year’s Resolution for 2012 – find a good travel agent and start using them regularly. This is a resolution you will find easy to keep, because once you try it you will enjoy better – and often cheaper – trips than ever before.

Just a couple of years ago, headlines were about the demise of the travel agent, about to go the way of the Dodo and the dinosaur. Guess what? Travel agents are not only still here, they are experiencing a rebound – despite (or because of?) the myriad travel tools available online.

So why should you use a travel agent?

There are many, many good reasons, which I will explain. But the bottom line is that they know more than you do, they are better connected than you, they have access to benefits you can’t get otherwise, they can often beat any other prices available (even online, yes), and after you have planned everything, they provide a safety net during your trip that you simply won’t get by booking yourself or buying insurance. Having a top travel agent can also make you an instant VIP – free room upgrades, hard to get restaurant reservations, cutting lines, access to otherwise closed stores and exhibits, private guides, and cheaper – often much cheaper – premium airfares. Here’s the best part: even though most top agents charge fees, in almost every firsthand experience I or my friends, family, and acquaintances have had, travel agents have saved money, often a lot of money, thousands of dollars, and in every case, more than paid for themselves.

To be frank, not everyone taking a trip needs a travel agent. The benefits they offer increase as your travel becomes more luxurious, expensive, and specialized. Need a cheap flight to Florida to visit family and a night at a 3-star airport hotel en route? By all means let your fingers do the walking. Need a bargain-priced, all-inclusive ski vacation or Vegas weekend?  You can easily find that online. Need a cheap cruise on a mass market ship? Yes, you can book that yourself. But I’ve already written at length here at Forbes about why if you are taking any higher end cruise you would be foolish – I mean making a really big mistake – not to use a top cruise agent. The same goes for plenty of other travel:  If you are staying at 4 and 5-star hotels, flying in the premium cabin (or private aviation), planning complicated itineraries with multiple stops, planning complex airline routings, or taking any trip using guides/drivers or local experts, any trip that VIP access would make better, any trip to a destination where you do not already know all the best places to eat and best things to see and do, or any cultural travel, from safaris to ancient ruins, you need a travel agent. In fact, in any of these scenarios, if you don’t use a travel agent you are and likely making a costly mistake, no matter how much you think you know. I travel for a living and write on travel for a living and I still use travel agents.

To be clear, I am talking about true experts, the really good travel agents who add value, not the ones running full page ads of deals in the Sunday papers.  The best travel agents are essentially consultants, and many prefer “travel advisor,” because it is their advice, expertise, and connections that are of great value, not the ability to print airline tickets for you. A few have become hyper-specialized, and in some cases, like booking a cruise, golf vacation, space travel, or a very specialized theme trip like art, music or polar exploration, you will want to seek out a niche specialist. But for most travelers, it is better to find an excellent generalist travel advisor and stick with them, because a big part of the equation is that they get to know you and your wants, likes and dislikes, and make suggestions accordingly. You would not use a different financial advisor every time you opened a new bank or brokerage account, so why keep switching travel agents? “Once we get to know each other, the time I save them is invaluable to them. If I can get the client to ‘let go/give in/trust in me!’ once, then they become clients for life,” said Leigh Sullivan, a highly acclaimed luxury travel expert with Regency Travel in Memphis, TN.  If you choose right, you won’t lose any expertise in the process, because the best agencies have multiple agents with overlapping spheres of specialization who collaborate, so while your agent who is an expert on Asia may not specialize in safaris when the time comes for you to book one, there’s a good chance one of their colleagues at a nearby desk does.

"How will I find a great and expert guide to the wonders of Ancient Rome?" A good travel agent already knows one.

Among the many major advantages high-powered agents bring to the table is personal connections and clout. “Connections” means knowing GMs and execs at top hotels (and airlines, chefs, cruise lines, adventure travel outfitters, etc.) personally. It is very rare for luxury hotels or the most desirable restaurants to truly be sold out: they usually have rooms/tables available in case Tom Cruise or another VIP makes a last minute visit. This is especially important if you are trying to visit a destination at a very peak time: the Superbowl, New Orleans at Mardi Gras, Cannes during the film festival, Park City over President’s Day weekend. Who do you think will be able to get the coveted and hidden room inventory, you calling an 800 reservation center, or your travel agent calling the GM who he or she has known for 20 years – and sends a lot of business to? It’s not just these scenarios, it is everyday room upgrades, special amenities, bottles of champagne on arrival, the GM greeting you personally, all these extras come from the travel agents calling on your behalf – at no extra cost to you. The clout part comes from volume. For example, even the top luxury hotels are notorious for refusing to guarantee connecting rooms in advance for families booking multiple rooms. This is one of the most frustrating recurring problems I hear in the industry, and a reason why some people rent houses and apartments over multiple hotel rooms. When your travel agent books hundreds of room nights with a high profile luxury hotel each year, the hotel will move heaven and earth to give that agent’s client – you – guaranteed connecting rooms.

If you do not believe that top agents’ personal clout can take you further than the internet or any prestigious credit card or “concierge service,” here’s a true story. I was going to a hard to reach island in the Caribbean for a story, and when a travel agent who does a lot of volume with a particular airline suggested flights I winced. She asked me why, and I explained that I was elite on two other major carriers, and prefer to fly them because of the miles, points and status, and to this airline I was a nobody, so the miles would not help me. “No problem,” she said, “I’ll call my guy at the airline’s sales department and he’ll make you Gold.” And he did. This is one of the largest airlines in the world, and Gold is the second tier of their elite program, not entry level, reserved for those who fly 50,000 miles per year – the equivalent of about 8 transcontinental round trips and over 100 hours of flying time – or one phone call, depending who you know.

Another big selling point of the best agents is their expertise. A friend was taking his children to Italy for the first time, on a biking and walking trip in the Dolomites, and decided to add Rome because he wanted them to see the historic sites. He called me and asked for help, so I told him to call Anne Scully, President of McCabe World Travel in Virginia, a true industry superstar who is perennially ranked one of the 5 or 10 best travel agents in the nation by anyone who ranks these things. She arranged a van and driver to take his family from their bike tour drop-off point to Rome, helped him pick a well-located luxury hotel that suited his needs, and set up private tours of ancient Rome and the Vatican with two different specialized expert guides. Alternatively, he could have booked guides, hotel and a driver for the long trip for his family blindly on the internet. But this way, he was getting a very known quantity. And free upgraded hotel amenities.

Lufthansa app now also for Windows Phone 8

Lufthansa has expanded its mobile services with a smartphone app for users of Windows Phone 8.

A special feature of the app on this operating system is the live-tile function with which the most important information on flight status – continually updated – is pinned on the start screen without the need to open the app.

As with the other mobile operating systems the Lufthansa app provides easy access to the entire Lufthansa timetable from anywhere.

Once a suitable connection is found, it can be booked on the move immediately. Passengers can also check in whenever they want and file their electronic boarding pass in their smartphone.

When travelling abroad this saves them the roaming fees they would otherwise incur by downloading the boarding pass anew.

The free app is available for download here.

With Windows Phone 8, Lufthansa has now come up with a specially adapted app for all of the most widely-used mobile smartphone operating systems.

Whether with Android, Apple iOS, BlackBerry and also Windows Phone 8, more than 98 per cent of all smartphone users, worldwide, can utilise the Lufthansa app and benefit from its extensive functions.

The new app for the smartphone Windows Phone 8 operating system was developed in cooperation between Lufthansa, Microsoft and Nokia, and implemented by SapientNitro.

“Passengers with a Windows Phone 8 Smartphone can now also enjoy the benefits of our mobile app functions,” says Marcus Casey, head of global online sales and mobile services, Lufthansa.

“Our aim is to offer our customers through digital contact identical innovations to those we offer on our flights.

“Mobile services are assuming increasing importance especially for our passengers.

“That’s why it is important to Lufthansa to be represented on all relevant mobile operating systems.”

Fowlds to highlight plight of African rhino in London

Join Dr William Fowlds on September 18th 2013 as he hosts an inspirational lecture at the Royal Geographical Society, London, highlighting the plight of the rhino and his mission to protect these iconic creatures of South Africa and to raise funds for TUSK Trust & Born Free Foundation.

South Africa has been gripped by a massive surge in rhino poaching in recent years.

In 2007, 13 rhinos were poached.

In 2013 it estimated that 900 rhinos will be poached with almost three rhinos being killed every day.

Rhinos are poached for their horns which, according to some South East Asian countries, have healing capabilities and other medicinal uses and values.

Modern science has, however, proved that the horn carries absolutely no medicinal value and is, in fact, made up of the same protein, keratin, which is found in human fingernails.

Yet the demand for the product continues to increase.

Current international debate aimed at bringing an end to poaching include; legalising the rhino horn trade, dehorning rhinos, stricter law enforcement, decreasing demand through bans (it is illegal to trade in rhino horn through rules stipulated by CITES) or education, and an improved consolidated and collaborative approach by all stakeholders, the situation is becoming more critical by the day.

Fowlds is a South African veterinarian and star of ITV1’s Safari Vet School.

His day-to-day job includes darting lions, elephants and antelopes but last year he was called out to a harrowing situation, unlike anything he’d encountered before.

Overnight, three rhinos had been illegally darted using veterinary drugs and the poachers had brutally removed bone, skin and horn with either machetes or axes, leaving the rhinos for dead.

One rhino had in fact already died from its injuries but Themba, a male, and Thandi, a female were still alive when they were discovered the next morning.

So began a gruelling, heart-rending week of trying to save these two, huge and massively mutilated animals.

Decisions had to be made whether to euthanize them straight away or give them a chance.

Will was determined to try to save these rhinos.

This is his story.

Bear Grylls, who will offer an introduction to the lecture, said: “As the world’s population explodes, the wildlife on all seven continents is being negatively affected and their numbers are dwindling.

“I have chosen to support one such specie as a symbol for all animals in trouble around the world; the rhino in Africa.

“Will Fowlds’s story should be heard by all, his account of the tragic consequences of poaching and the hope that he holds for the future in his crusade to save the survivors of these criminal acts.”

Tickets cost £20 per person and include a complimentary drinks reception before the lecture.

Residents flee as volcano spews ash

Indonesia's most volatile volcano spewed smoke and ash Monday, forcing hundreds of people to flee their villages along its slopes, a disaster official said.

Mount Merapi on the main island of Java rumbled as heavy rain fell around its cloud-covered crater, said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, disaster mitigation agency spokesman.

The volcano unleashed a column of dark red volcanic material 1 000m into the air, and the ash made the rain thick and muddy in several villages as terrified residents fled to safety, he said.

The sound was heard 30km away, but an eruption did not occur and the volcano's alert level was not raised, Nugroho said.

The 2 968m mountain is the most active of 500 Indonesian volcanoes. Its last major eruption in 2010 killed 347 people.

Indonesia, an archipelago of 240 million people, is prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity because it sits along the Pacific "Ring of Fire," a horseshoe-shaped series of fault lines.

SAA on Strike

SAA has confirmed that around 4 000 of its employees and members of the South African Transport and Allied Workers' Union (Satawu), will strike today.

The union said the airline had undermined wage negotiations, however SAA spokeswoman, Dileseng Koetle, said Satawu had intended continuing the strike, despite its understanding with the airline last week. She said it had reverted to its demands prior to the deadlock in conciliation at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration.

"SAA is of the view that Satawu is deliberately misrepresenting facts with the intention of misleading its members and inciting a section of the airline's employees to embark on the strike action on matters that are not relating to the wage negotiation process.

"This is despite parties having agreed in principle to the 6,5% across-the-board offer, subject to all parties obtaining a further mandate on this offer," said Dileseng.

"The misunderstanding and miscommunication presented by Satawu is regrettable, particularly pertaining to the bulk of employees who have indicated their willingness to accept the above offer," Dileseng said.

"Despite Satawu's regrettable intention, SAA will monitor the situation and, should the need arise, the airline will activate its contingency plans in order to ensure business continuity."

These measures will be there to try and avoid causing inconvenience to customers and passengers.

British Airways welcomes first A380 to UK

British Airways has taken delivery of its first Airbus A380 today at Heathrow – the first British airline to receive the world’s largest commercial jet.
The UK flag-carrier is also the first airline in Europe to operate both the A380 and the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, the first two of which landed at Heathrow last week.
The airline announced today that the very first long-haul flight on the A380 to Los Angeles will be on September 24th, 2013, and the first to Hong Kong will be on October 22nd.
Keith Williams, British Airways, chief executive, said: “We are delighted to welcome the first of our A380s to the fleet, joining our new 787s.
“These aircraft are the start of a new era for British Airways.
“Over the next 15 months, we will take delivery of new aircraft at the rate of one a fortnight as we put ourselves at the forefront of modern aviation.
“The A380 is a fantastic aircraft and an excellent showpiece for British engineering. Our customers are going to love the space, light and comfort on board.”
British Airways’ A380s will accommodate 469 customers across four cabins.
Customers in First will be seated at the front of the main deck.
The cabin will offer 14 seats and is evolved from the current First class with 30 per cent more personal space and 60 per cent more personal stowage.

Club World (business class) customers can choose from 44 seats on the main deck, or 53 seats on the upper deck.
These upper deck seats will feature a new 2:3:2 configuration across the cabin.
The 55 World Traveller Plus (premier economy) seats will be located on the upper deck while World Traveller (economy) customers can choose seats on both the main and upper deck.
Customers travelling in both World Traveller and World Traveller Plus will be able to enjoy the new cabins and seats that have proved so popular on our 777-300ER fleet.
The aircraft’s innovative design makes it much quieter during take-off and landing and 16 per cent more fuel efficient than a Boeing 747.
British Airways has ordered 12 A380s for delivery by 2016.
Three will arrive this year followed by a further five in 2014.
Both aircraft types will now begin a complex ‘entry into service’ programme, which will see pilot and cabin crew training taking place at Manston Airport in Kent, customer service trials at Heathrow and short-haul flying for both aircraft, including flights within the UK.

New EU member state boosted by surge in UK traveller interest

Over half (61%) of UK travellers are considering Croatia as a travel destination, a new TripAdvisor poll has revealed in the week that Croatia becomes the European Union’s 28th member state.

The poll of 4,000 British travellers follows a 14% surge in the number of UK searches for Croatian holidays on TripAdvisor in the last twelve months.

However, it remains unclear as to whether Croatia’s entry into the EU will encourage more British holidaygoers to opt for the Balkan state in future. Less than one in ten (7%) polled said that Croatia’s new EU status made them more interested in visiting the country, while just under one in six (16%) admitted that Croatia’s EU membership had actually made them less interested in travelling there.

“Croatia is one of the best value destinations in Europe, which is one of the reasons it is proving so popular with British holidaymakers. Whether the country’s new status in the EU will spur or slow that growth in tourism remains to be seen,” commented TripAdvisor spokesperson, James Kay.

Croatia’s capital offers value for travellers against majority of other EU capital cities When comparing the cost of an overnight stay in each of the EU’s 28 capital cities, Zagreb currently ranks as the eighth cheapest, with the average price of a 4* hotel room coming in at £91.03 – less than half the price of an equivalent stay in London.
In the first two months of Croatia’s entry into the EU, based on the average room rates for that period, Zagreb will drop to tenth in the rankings – but will still be considerably cheaper than other popular tourist destinations, such as Rome, Amsterdam and Paris.

Tanzania establishes new tourism unit

In order to ensure security and diplomatic support to foreign visitors and tourists visiting Tanzania, the Tanzania Police Force has established a special unit charged to take care of the safety requirements of diplomatic mission members and other foreign tourists visiting destination Tanzania.

Commanding Officer of the Unit, Tanzania’s Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mary Nzuki, said Tanzania Police Force had decided to form a special unit to ensure that tourists who come to visit this African safari country would enjoy maximum security throughout their stay. She noted that her mission was to meet tourist stakeholders to learn more about the tourism and hospitality industry and establishing how they could work together for the benefit of the industry.

The Tanzania Tourist Board Managing Director, Dr. Aloyce Nzuki, said the Police Force’s move would make a significant impact on the development of the tourism industry in Tanzania, because peace and security are critical factors in attracting more visitors to any destination.

Tanzania government had last month decided to establish special units within the Tanzania Police Force to address security issues pertaining to investment ventures, mining in particular, tourism, and environment in an effort to reduce crime in key tourist areas including cities, towns, wildlife parks, historical sites, roads leading to remote tourist sites, hotels, and lodges.

State of emergency declared in Malaysia

Singapore woke up to clear blue skies on Monday thanks to favourable winds but Malaysia was still being suffocated by smog from forest fires in Indonesia, where cloud-seeding flights have produced little rain.

Malaysia has declared a state of emergency in two southern districts after smog triggered by forest fires in Indonesia reached hazardous levels. The coastal towns of Muar and Ledang are in shutdown, and residents have been advised to stay indoors. Air pollution has also worsened in the capital, Kuala Lumpur, shrouding its landmark Petronas Towers in hazy smoke.

Malaysia's environment minister is to meet his Indonesian counterpart on Wednesday to discuss the problem.

Smog has become an annual problem in Malaysia, but this is the first time in eight years that a state of emergency has been called, the BBC reports. People are angry that the authorities have not been able to address the health hazard, our correspondent says.

Officials on Sunday confirmed the Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) had exceeded 700 in two districts. A reading above 300 indicates that air pollution has reached dangerous levels.

Schools in the region have been ordered to remain closed. Local authorities have distributed face masks to residents. Even in Kuala Lumpur, where smog levels have so far remained moderate, visibility is now strongly reduced and the smell of thick smoke hangs in the air, correspondents say.

The haze drifted across from Singapore, which has experienced record pollution levels as a result of the fumes originating in Indonesia's Riau province.

Meanwhile conditions in densely populated Singapore first began to improve from “harmful” on Saturday and the pollutant index early Monday was around 50 — within the “good” air-quality bracket.

Poor visibility has also forced at least two flights to be turned away from Pekanbaru on Monday, due to the haze currently hanging over the Indonesian city. A SilkAir flight from Singapore and an AirAsia service from Kuala Lumpur were both forced to abandon their planned landings at Pekanbaru’s Sultan Syarif Kasim II International Airport this morning due to poor visibility. Smoke drifting over the airport from nearby forest fires has reduced visibility to as low as 300 metres, Indonesia’s Antara news agency reported.

Pekanbaru is the capital of Indonesia’s Riau province – the area worst affected by the recent haze. Flights continue to operate as scheduled at Singapore’s Changi Airport, while services are also reported to be unaffected at Senai Airport in neighbouring Johor Bahru.

Malaysia Airlines’ operations control centre chief, Mohd Fuad Mohd Sharuji, was reported by Malaysia’s Bernama news agency as saying that “aircraft can still land” at Johor, but that the airline was prepared to postpone or cancel flights if the haze worsened. Singapore’s second airport, Seletar, closed last week due to the haze.

More strike action looms at Perth

Security screeners at Perth Airport's Qantas terminal are poised to strike again after their employer locked staff out of the job for wearing "Paid Less in the West" T-shirts.

United Voice assistant secretary Pat O'Donnell says 11 screeners who were rostered on from 21h30 WST yesterday were frogmarched from the terminal within 30 minutes for donning the T-shirts and handing out stickers to travellers. He says the move reduced the number of screening points from two to one, and brought the total number of screeners indefinitely locked out of the job to 25.

The screeners are protesting against their employer MSS Security for offering them lower wages than many of their interstate counterparts. Rolling strikes were held from Tuesday to Saturday last week, and union members will meet later on Monday to decide whether to take further industrial action.

Meanwhile 40 screeners protested outside the terminal last night as part of the campaign. The action coincided with heavy fog last night and this morning that delayed flights at the airport, leaving long queues of frustrated travellers waiting for their flights to be rescheduled.

Post tropical storm to impact United Kingdom

Tropical storm Andrea brought heavy rainfall to the northeastern United States Friday night into Saturday morning and then soaked Atlantic Canada Saturday into Sunday.

Andrea is now just a post-tropical low pressure, but its fast movement will allow it to reach Ireland and the United Kingdom by later Tuesday into Wednesday.

The remnant low associated with Andrea will be the second in a series of three fast moving lows that will impact Ireland and the United Kingdom from Monday night into Thursday with the strongest winds expected across Ireland, Scotland and southwest England.

Total rainfall amounts of 12-25 mm are expected across Ireland, Northern Ireland, southwest England, Wales and western Scotland with lesser amounts farther east.

Winds of 25-50 kph will be common across all of the United Kingdom and Ireland, but damaging wind gusts in excess of 80 kph will be possible from Ireland into Scotland, as well as parts of southwest England with the greatest threat along and near southern- and western-facing coastal areas.
