Cape Town - Attractions open and fire ‘contained’

Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson Theo Layne said this morning that the fires which have plagued Cape Town's south peninsula this week are currently contained.

However, the city is still monitoring active hotspots including the Tokai; Chapman's Peak; Muizenberg; and Noordhoek areas.

Firefighting Operations have been scaled down, especially in the Muizenberg area, with nine fire engines monitoring the mountain range that extends from Muizenberg to Clovelly in Fish Hoek.

Meanwhile, the city’s main attractions are operating as normal despite the destructive fires. 

As reported by eTNW, Cape Point was closed on Wednesday from 14h00. The fire at the reserve has since been contained and the site is now running as normal. 

The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway, which was closed yesterday because of strong winds, has not been affected by the fires and is operating as usual. Sections of the Table Mountain National Park remain closed to the public as authorities conduct extensive assessments to ensure the facilities are safe for public use. 

The Cape Town Cycle Tour, one of the province’s most popular events, has adapted its route in response to the fires. The tour has been shortened from its usual 109km to 47km. This year’s route takes riders from the usual starting point at the Civic Centre along the M3 and back again, before finishing in Green Point. 

The city will continue to monitor all hotspots in the Cape Town south peninsula as the wind still poses a threat.
